Australian Cinema

For a far off place, we do manage to spawn some wonderful films (OK and some not so wonderful), not to mention great talent that has gone to bigger and brighter things in Hollywood. My personal homage to Aussie Cinema - when we get it right, it's bloody brilliant.

Posters can be hard to get your hands on at the best of times...have you tried getting your mitts on Aussie paper for Aussie films? It's enough to send a girl MAD!

As this collection grows, I decided to include material from all over the world and not just Australian paper. This was for two main reasons: firstly the international artwork is alot of times superior to the Australian, and secondly, it's interesting to me to see how the film was sold overseas.

Peter Weir's intensely creepy delve into a remote Australian town with a strange secret.

A top notch Aussie cast with superb script makes for a most depressing movie, that you will never forget. Clever and powerful, and never boring, this is a must see movie for not only fans of Australian Cinema, but also Horror genre and just good film making.

The film was re titled to CARS THAT EAT PEOPLE in the USA, apparently as everyone would assume it was set in France. The Australian daybill (only format with this title) is the best and most sought after paper for a true cult classic. Made a year before Picnic at Hanging Rock, Peter Weir already proves he is up there with the best Directors in Cinema history

Australian One Sheet for the original release of the film by B.E.F. The later re-release of the film by Roadshow features the same art

Based on the novel by Joan Lindsay, we follow a group of schoolgirls on an excursion to Hanging Rock, where not all of them return. Some of the films mystique comes from the belief it is based on a true story, which it is not. However the novels author refused to confirm nor deny the truth of event.

A beautiful film with some of the most haunting music you will ever see. A true gem of an Australian film.

Turkey Shoot
(1982)

Who will survive...the blood and thunder shocker of the year!?

Australian One Sheet

In the late 70s and early 80s, Anthony I. Ginnane was Australia's answer to Roger Corman. He produced a series of genre films in Australia and New Zealand that included titles such as Dead Kids, Patrick, Thirst, The Survivor and Turkey Shoot.

Known in the US as Escape 2000 (funny, as it is set in 1995) and in the UK as Blood Camp Thatcher, Turkey Shoot has some of the legends of 80s Australian talent: Noel Ferrier, Carmen Duncan, Lynda Stoner, Roger Ward, and Gus Mercurio, with imports Steve Railsback and Olivia Hussey.

Turkey Shoot tells the story of a terrible future, where simply questioning a police officer's actions can land you in one of the state's terrible prison camps, as Chris Walters (Olivia Hussey) has found out. Joining two other new prisoners, subversive malcontent Paul Anders (Steve Railsback) and prostitute Rita Daniels (Lynda Stoner), she finds herself in the inescapable camp run by Warden Charles Thatcher (Michael Craig) and his villainous aide de camps Chief Guard Ritter (Roger Ward) and Red (Gus Mercurio). On occasion, Thatcher runs 'turkey shoots' where he releases weaponless prisoners into the forest surrounding the camp for various heavily armed politicians and socialites to track down and kill. The prisoners reward if they survive…freedom!!

Turkey Shoot was directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith (Dead End Drive Inn), and was an attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Mad Max films (dystopian future) and inescapable prisons (Escape from New York). Unfortunately, this film seems at times like something is missing, and there is. One of the financial backers pulled out at the last minute and 15 pages of script had to be removed, and the set up featuring citizen unrest and a police state, became a small series of stock footage of rioting and civilian rebellion. This, and the fact that one of the female stars refused to do nudity, and Steve Railsback's intense method acting style which caused some cast conflict meant that the movie and the director suffered. Turkey Shoot went from being an exploitative social commentary to an over the top campy gore fest, but somehow still remains a great bit of moronic entertainment, and I mean that with great affection.

I am at a bit of a loss as to how to describe this movie. Visually, it is quite stunning. Wonderful Dali-esque imagery. Story wise...well it starts of quite promising, with a young New York reporter going to an Outback town in Australia, to cover a story on animal cruelty. When she dies, her husband heads out to find the truth behind her death. In doing so, he finds himself the target of a killer wild boar, back to terrorise the small town.

What really lets this one down was the ending...it was almost like they were in a real hurry to just finish it. Had some more time and thought been spent into that, it would have been served far better. Still a good watch though.

An Aussie crim is trying to get into business with the Americans, but before he can sort out that business he needs to make sure his wife doesn't find out about his mistress, and his mistress doesn't fall for the new guy.

This is a great aussie film, very clever and funny...highly recommended with great performances from everyone involved.

At all manner of events, Kenny and his port-a-loos are there ensuring the event goes off without a hitch, unappreciated and at time tormented by the throng of people he is there to help out.

Done in the documentary style, this fictitious character and his crew are simply delightful. By the end of the film, you can't help but barrack for Kenny, hoping that success and true love are truly just around the corner for him. Australian cinema at its finest.

Mates became heroes. The track became legend

Australian One Sheet

We share the journey of two young brothers and the group of men they fight this horrific battle along side with.

I really wanted to love it. I really did, but it was just lacking so much for me. It portrays the brutality and sheer horror of what these men must have had to endure well, but I think it forgets to connect us with the men themselves. I found myself horrified at what they had to go through, but not really emotionally invested in any of them.

After the imprisonment of her brother, to whom Katrina is devoted, she plots to raise enough money for his appeal as well as her escape from suburbia, hoping that they can make a new start of it upon his release.

Although Suburban Mayhem has received a luke warm response from many people, I actually really enjoy this movie. The style of the film and story I found interesting and engrossing. Our leading lady played by Emily Barclay I thought was simply wonderful, especially considering this is her first feature film.

The gothic horror film is not one that has been done in Australia, so it is interesting to see this relatively low budget attempt by new film makers. While it doesn't quite hit the mark on several counts (the story and performances do tend to let it down some) I'd still recommend you give it a go.
